Daniel Wyche & Patrick Shiroishi, Longform Editions 034

Patrick Shiroishi - Horns / Daniel Wyche - Guitars & Objects

Recorded and Mixed by Brian J. Sulpizio / Mastered by Simon Scott at SPS Mastering.

“This music is the second set of recordings Patrick and I have ever done, and it is not a coincidence that this is also the second time we've ever hung out in person. I encountered Patrick’s music through the web of mutual friends and connections, but I think it was primarily through Gabriel Vanlandingham-Dunn that I was inspired to really take a deep and focused listen around 2018. In 2019, I was taking a trip to LA to visit my sister and Patrick and I got in touch and made plans to do some recording as a trio with the percussionist Ted Byrnes. That session had a kind of energy of the time: it was loud, hard, intense, noisey, and chaotic. It was how we were feeling then, that day at least, and with the first note everything was just pure communication. In the time since then, we've collaborated remotely, mostly through the Quarantine Concerts, a series I helped found in March 2020. But with a few years between us, everything is a bit different, everyone in a new headspace and both of us were thinking to try something different. This time, it felt intuitively right to approach this next session with gentleness, patience, care, and maybe even a sort of kindness. So in October 2022, we did what we did the last time we met: made music. And as I said, the intuitions were, for me anyway, just the same, even as the content was different. There was a quiet care right there from the first sounds, and it all just waded into this wash, and here we are.”

A Commission of the Grand Council of Arts and Memory of the Third Human Sodality, in memory of those lifeforms of the First Void Fleet, lost forever in the space between space.

“These compositions collectively narrate and memorialize the attempt by an advanced, galaxy-spanning human civilization to cross the final barrier, the “void:” the space between universes. A fleet of vessels was commissioned in an attempt to reach technological and spiritual capacities beyond the limits of current human recognition. Many ships, the first prototypes of the “Cormorant”-class vessels, were destroyed, then salvaged, studied, and rebuilt. Finally, a design was achieved that could open and cross the space between space, and the five vessels of First Void Fleet of the Third Human Sodality were christened: The River Tiber, The Pearl of Lisbon, The Heart of Hearts, The Remainder (flagship of the fleet), and the Cormorant III (crafted of the salvaged remains of its predecessors). Though some were destroyed in the attempt, certain vessels did in fact pierce the breach, even if that is the only fact we can be sure of, as all communication was immediately lost. Perhaps some arrived, safely and intact...  more

Ben Billington (Quicksails, Tiger Hatchery), Mark Shippy (Invisible Things, US Maple) & Daniel Wyche are back! After their maniacal self-titled slaughter of a debut on Astral Spirits, the BSW 3 return but this time it’s dark and stormy. “The Eventual Warp Cat” is a cosmic eulogy, like a captain’s log on a drifting spacecraft. If Part 1 serves as side-long voyage into a blackhole, then Side 2 is from inside the blackhole- a ghost ship ride starting with a buzz, eventually building into a massive supernova filling every millimeter of the stereo field. It’s Billington, Shippy, and Wyche… in Outer Space.

Billington/Shippy/Wyche - S/T, Astral Spirits 2017

1. Kater's Maroon Mini

2. Dale's Oracular Fox Unit

3. Norvin's Fandled Submersible

Astral Spirits is proud to present the debut release from the Chicago based trio of BEN BAKER BILLINGTON (Tiger Hatchery, Quicksails, ONO, etc), MARK SHIPPY (US Maple, Invisible Things) and DANIEL WYCHE. These three have been playing together in various duo and trio formations for a handful of years, and we are thrilled to release the first studio recordings from this incredibly cohesive unit.

This is free improvisation from a gleefully pure perspective. All three musicians keep their hands in various forms of jazz/rock/noise/experimental musics and it becomes quite evident through the beautiful racket of this self titled debut. This group isn't about pedigree or posture, the trio relies on communication and ecstatic empathy that comes through loud and clear on this tape.. Sure, with a group boasting two guitarists and a drummer there is a certain amount of volume/noise present, but to call it noise rock, or free rock would belittle the process of Billington/Shippy/Wyche. All three improvise with forethought and purpose...and also it's just a helluva lot of fun. Just ask the folks that got their minds blown recently at Cropped Out!

Billington/Shippy/Wyche is out September 22, 2017 in an edition of 150 tapes with digital download.
